The Liberation of Chateauneuf de Faou
On Sunday, July 30th 1944, the Royal Air Force bombed the "Château de Trévarez", used as a rest center for German and Japanese submarine crews based at the harbors of Brest and Lorient. The following week, the French resistance undertook several actions against the Germans who then retaliated by killing numberous civilians in the course of their retreat. Finally, on 5 August, the 86th Reconnaissance Squadron of the 6th US Armored Division entered Chateauneuf du Faou by the Pont du Roy. There was in immediate outbreak of joy in the streets of the town as the people showed their immense gratitude to their liberators. Unfortunately, this joy was short-lived. After the departure of the American squadron, four German soldiers on motorcycles made their way through the crowd and went to the Pont du Roy. They had observed the comings and goings of an American dispatch driver who was behind the armored division. From the bridge, they fired on the American and hurt him seriously, thus depriving our liberators of their liaison officer.

Meanwhile, the US division had left the town and was fighting against the Germans three kilometers north, on the road to Châteaulin. They then decided to come back to Chateauneuf du Faou, not knowing that the enemy was lying in ambush below the Chapel Notre Dame des Portes, which offers a magnificent vantage point. From this high position, the Germans attacked the last of the American vehicles with grenades and machineguns, easily succeeding, on the sharp bend, in isolating them from the rest of the division. The Americans who had crossed the bridge were powerless to stop the slaughter of their comrades. Twelve American soldiers lost their lives in this fight for the liberation of Chateauneuf du Faou.
On the occaision of the 50th anniversary of its liberation, August 6th 1944, the town of Chateauneuf du Faou, which holds the "Croix du Guerre" for its resistance during the war, erected this memorial in honor of those Americans who died on its soil. A group of American veterans, some of who had fought in the battle for Chateauneuf du Foau in 1944, were present for the unveiling ceremony.

La Libération de Chateauneuf de Faou
Le dimanche 30 juillet 1944, la Royal Air Force bombarde le "Château de Trévarez", utilisé comme centre de repos pour les équipages de sous-marins allemands et japonais basés dans les ports de Brest et Lorient. La semaine suivante, la résistance française entreprend plusieurs actions contre les Allemands qui ripostent ensuite en tuant des civils nombreux au cours de leur retraite. Enfin, le 5 août, le 86e Escadron de reconnaissance de la 6e division blindée américaine entre dans Chateauneuf du Faou par le Pont du Roy. Il y a eu une flambée immédiate de joie dans les rues de la ville alors que les gens ont montré leur immense gratitude à leurs libérateurs.
Malheureusement, cette joie a été de courte durée. Après le départ de l'escadron américain, quatre soldats allemands à moto se sont frayés un chemin dans la foule et se sont rendus au Pont du Roy. Ils avaient observé les allées et venues d'un chauffeur de dispatch américain qui se trouvait derrière la division blindée. Depuis le pont, ils ont tiré sur l'Américain et l'ont blessé sérieusement, privant ainsi nos libérateurs de leur officier de liaison. Pendant ce temps, la division américaine avait quitté la ville et se battait contre les Allemands à trois kilomètres au nord, sur la route de Châteaulin.
Ils ont alors décidé de revenir à Chateauneuf du Faou, ne sachant pas que l'ennemi était couché en embuscade sous la chapelle Notre-Dame des Portes, qui offre un magnifique point de vue. De cette position haute, les Allemands ont attaqué le dernier des véhicules américains avec des grenades et des mitrailleuses, réussissant facilement, sur le virage serré, en les isolant du reste de la division. Les Américains qui avaient traversé le pont étaient impuissants à arrêter le massacre de leurs camarades. Douze soldats américains ont perdu la vie dans ce combat pour la libération de Chateauneuf du Faou.
A l'occasion du 50e anniversaire de sa libération, le 6 août 1944, la ville de Chateauneuf du Faou, qui tient la "Croix du Guerre" pour sa résistance pendant la guerre, a érigé ce mémorial en l'honneur des Américains morts sur son sol. Un groupe de vétérans américains, dont certains avaient combattu dans la bataille pour Chateauneuf du Foau en 1944, étaient présents pour la cérémonie de dévoilement.
